Sealon For Oxygen Service
 Gasket
Materials Approved For Oxygen Service |
The following materials have been approved for gaseous and liquid
oxygen service by the LAid Liquid Laboratory at Blane Mesnil:
FAWN GYLON #3502, a product of
Garlock®, available in sheet form 1/16" and 1/8" thick.
SEALON, a product of Ameraflex Rubber & Gasket
Co., Inc. of Deer Park, TX, available in 1/32", 1/16", and 1/8" thick.
 GORE-TEX® JOINT SEALANT, a product of W.
L. Gore & Assoc.®, Elkton, MD, available as a tape, strip or
round extrusion from a little more than 1/32" to 3/4" thick.
 Fawn
Gylon® #3502 is a fawn colored sheet material that is primarily
PTFE that is filled with an inert solid. The #3502 must be specified as it is
specially formulated from materials that are suitable for oxygen. They also
sell a Fawn Gylon® #3500 that is not to be used with oxygen. It
is fairly expensive and is usually only sold by the 5' x 5' sheet.
 Sealon is
also a filled PTFE material with a salmon color, with properties very similar
if not the same as Gylon®. It is said to be less expensive than
Gylon® and can be bought and cut to size standard pipe gaskets
or smaller than the 4' x 4' or 4' x 8' standard sheet.
Gore-Tex® ribbon is 100% PTFE, white in color,
and can be used to seal some flanges and for some valve stem or similar packing
applications.
The testing lab warns that if any of these materials are to be
used where there is likelihood of adiabatic compression with oxygen, additional
tests should be conducted under specific conditions before use is
approved.
